Turning 40!

The 1974 ChallengeSo, I’m turning 40 next year. The big four-oh! So, I was planning on challenging myself, and read some books from the year I was born, i.e books published in 1974. Do you have any suggestions? If so, please let me know by commenting below!

EDIT 27.12.2013

Please give me your personal suggestions on books you think I should read, and it would be fun to know why you think I should read it too! Please don’t point me to a list on GoodReads or elsewhere, I’m quite good at finding such lists myself. I want your thoughts, not some list someone has made, that’s not quite the same. 😉

    • I’m familiar with the page on GoodReads (though I don’t use GoodReads myself), but as I commented elsewhere, I’m fishing for suggestions of books people would like to recommend. Just picking books from a list isn’t all that interesting, to be honest. 😉

Number 2 is already suggested, so I have that on my list of suggestions already, will add number 3 to it. 🙂

  1. I don’t keep track of what year books were published, so I had to go looking.

If you haven’t read it already, I definitely recommend Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein.

Serendipity by Stephen Cosgrove is very cute.

I’ve read Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance but didn’t find it particularly enlightening.

The Chocolate War was good but I don’t know if you need to go out of your way to read it.

All the President’s Men and Carrie are both famous but I’ve never read either of them.

    Good luck!

  2. Have you ever read the Swedish series Trälarna (Trellene in Norwegian)? I remember it very fondly from my red childhood, although I’ve not dared to look into whether they have aged particularly well 🙂 The second and third books of the series were published in 1974. And Inger Hagerup’s Lille Persille is definitely worth a re-read for your 40th!

    • I haven’t read Trälarna, and since the first book was published in 1973, it’s off the list. 😉

But Lille Persille is definitely something to re-read! I love Inger Hagerup, and have ordered the book at the library!

  3. “The mote in Gods eye” by Larry Niven is a really good one, if you like science fiction. And it’s not your classic sci-fi either, but something completely unique.

For something completely different, check out “Poirot’s Early Cases” by [you REALLY should know this, otherwise shame on you], a series of short stories first published in 1974.

But my favourite of that year by far is “rendezvous with Rama” by Arthur C. Clarke. Mannen som person er totalt avskyelig, men skrive kan han!
